Do Some Science: March 2021

March 2021 is here and there are lots of opportunities to Do Some Science! From Pi Day to World Water Day to the Vernal Equinox, take a look at what March 2021 brings for the science lover in you.

In addition to being National Nutrition Month and Women’s History Month, the month of March is full of great opportunities to get involved in the world of science. On March 14th, you can celebrate Pi Day by learning a bit of math and sharing a bit of pie with your family and friends. We will welcome spring on the Vernal equinox (March 20th) and observe World Water Day on March 22nd. Here’s a list of some other great science events this month.

March 1: On this day in 1921, Harry Houdini was granted a patent (Patent US1370316A) for a diver’s suit.

March 1: Rebecca Lee was born on this day in 1864. She is credited with being the first African-American woman to get a medical degree in the United States.

March 1: On this day in 1896, Antoine Becquerel presented his discovery of spontaneous radioactivity to the Académie des Sciences in Paris, France.

March 3: African-American inventor, Garrett Morgan was born on this day in 1877. He is credited with the invention of the three-position traffic signal and the smoke hood (a predecessor of the gas mask).

March 3: Birthday of Alexander Graham Bell, the inventor of the first working telephone.

March 4: Ethologist, Jane Goodall was born on this day in 1934. She was a recognized chimpanzee expert and winner of the 1974 Walker prize.

March 5: On this day in 1982, the Soviet Union’s Venera 14 spacecraft landed on Venus. It managed to beam back images from the surface before the high pressure and temperature of the planet destroyed it.

March 6: On this day in 1899, Felix Hoffmann patented aspirin after discovering that the compound salicin, found in willow plants, relieved pain.

March 7: Alexander Graham Bell was granted a patent (Patent US174465A) for the telephone on this day in 1876.

March 10: On this day in 1876, the first telephone call took place between Alexander Graham Bell and Thomas Watson. The first words spoken by telephone – “Mr. Watson…come here…I want to see you.”

March 13: British astronomer, Frederick William Herschel discovered the planet Uranus on this day in 1781.

March 14: German-born theoretical physicist, Albert Einstein was born on this day in 1879. He is widely acknowledge as one of the greatest physicist of all time and is credited with the development of the Theory of Relativity.
