Every year, Brian Williams Science helps you find the perfect gift for the science enthusiast in your life. Today, we present Metal Straws!

Every year, the Brian Williams Science publishes a set of articles aimed at helping you find the perfect gift for the science enthusiast in your life. We call it Giving the Gift of Wonder. This year, we’ve got a very special  list of great gifts ideas meant to inspire curiosity and imagination.  Some are for children.  Others are for adults.  Many are for kids of all ages!  Chances are that you’ll be able to check a few names off your list with some of the ideas you find here. And as usual, we hope that you will take time this holiday season to Do Some Science!

Today’s Gift Idea: Metal Straws

About 175,000,000 plastic straws are thrown out each day in the United States. Because this plastic doesn’t decompose quickly, much of it ends up in landfills or oceans. By some estimates, there are 150,000,000 metric tons of plastic floating in our oceans. If this trend continues, scientist predict that by 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in our oceans.  In response to this problem, some countries, cities, and corporations have decided to eliminate single-use plastic straws. In an effort to “just say no” to plastic straws, some people are turning to reusable straws.  For about $10, you can pick up a beautiful set of metal straws for the environmentally conscious straw-lover in your life.  Most sets come with a combination of straight and bent straws as well as straws of different thicknesses. Many sets also come with a cleaning brush. The next time they sip their favorite smoothie, they will think of you and their shrinking environmental footprint!
